Pentagon Considers Adding Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD to Military-Linked Companies List
The Pentagon has concluded that three major Chinese companies—Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD—should be added to its 1260H list of firms linked to China's military. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg informed lawmakers of the decision on October 7, weeks before the US and China reached a trade truce.
Shares of all three companies dipped in Hong Kong trading following the Bloomberg report. Alibaba fell 2.2%, while Baidu and BYD each lost about 1%. Alibaba denied any military ties, asserting the designation wouldn’t impact its global operations.
Five other Chinese firms were also under consideration for the list, which currently names 134 companies. The MOVE underscores escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing, even as both nations navigate fragile trade negotiations.
